Permanent Exhibition ‘The Unification of Bulgaria in 1885’

The ‘Unification of Bulgaria of 1885’ exhibition is dedicated to one of the most momentous events in our history. It was opened in 1985 to mark the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Unification of the Principality of Bulgaria with Eastern Rumelia. An event that became a national symbol and brings pride to the Bulgarian people.

Since 1993, by decision of the Municipal Council, the day of the Unification – September 6th, has been declared an official holiday of the city of Plovdiv.

The exhibition presents the entire process – from the idea for the Unification to its realization and military defense during the Serbo-Bulgarian War.

The main thematic focus include:

  • the establishment of Eastern Rumelia as a second Bulgarian state;
  • the activities of the ‘Unity’ committees and the Bulgarian Secret Central Revolutionary Committee;
  • the organization and realization of the Unification;
  • the military defense of the national cause.

In four exhibition halls, visitors can view personal belongings, weapons, uniforms, seals, insignia, photographs and documents of participants in the Unification and the Serbo-Bulgarian War.

Among them are:

  • the seal of Zahari Stoyanov;
  • Zahari Stoyanov’s Winchester rifle;
  • the epitrachelion (stole) of Father Angel Cholakov;
  • the flags of the Golyamo Konare and Marash detachments (cheti), painted by Georgi Danchev – Zografina.

The exhibition is housed in the building constructed for the Regional Assembly of Eastern Rumelia. The project was designed by the Italian architect Pietro Montani, Chief Architect of Eastern Rumelia and it was build between 1883 and 1885.

The building features a large central assembly hall and side wings for the administration of the autonomous region’s parliament. Shortly before its completion, on September 6, 1885, the Unification of Eastern Rumelia with the Principality of Bulgaria was proclaimed in the immediate vicinity of the building.

Sofia became the capital of the united Bulgarian state, which is why Pietro Montani’s building was left without its intended purpose. In March 1886, by order of Prime Minister Petko Karavelov, the Plovdiv National Library and Museum was housed there.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Unification of Bulgaria, it was granted for the opening of the exhibition ‘Unification of Bulgaria of 1885’.

This architectural monument, preserving the memory of the Unification and its defense, remains a symbol of Bulgarian unity and statehood today. ‘Unity makes strength’ is not just a motto, but the eternal truth for the Bulgarian people!

Експозицията „Съединението на България от 1885 г.“ е посветена на едно от най-величавите събития в историята ни. Тя е открита през 1985 г., по повод честването на 100-годишнината от Съединението на Княжество България с Източна Румелия. Събитие, което се превръща в национален символ и носи гордост на българския народ. От 1993 г., с решение на Общински съвет, денят на Съединението – 6 септември е обявен за официален празник на град Пловдив.

Експозицията представя цялостния процес – от идеята за Съединение до неговото осъществяване и военна защита по време на Сръбско-българската война.

Акцентите са поставени върху:

  • изграждането на Източна Румелия като втора българска държава;

  • дейността на комитетите „Единство“ и Българския таен централен революционен комитет (БТЦРК);

  • организацията и осъществяването на Съединението;

военната защита на националното дело.

В четири зали са показани лични вещи, оръжия, униформи, печати, наградни знаци, снимки и документи на участници в Съединението и Сръбско-българската война.

Сред тях са:

  • печатът на Захари Стоянов,

  • пушката „Уинчестър“ на Захари Стоянов,

  • епитрахилът на поп Ангел Чолаков,

  • знамената на Голямоконарската и Марашката чета, рисувани от Георги Данчов – Зографина.

Експозицията е разположена в сградата, строена за Областно събрание на Източна Румелия. Проектът е на италианския архитект Пиетро Монтани, главен архитект на Източна Румелия, а строежът се извършва между 1883 и 1885 г.

Сградата разполага с голяма централна зала за заседания и странични крила за администрацията на парламента на автономната област. Малко преди да бъде завършена, на 6 септември 1885 г., в непосредствена близост до сградата, е провъзгласено Съединението на Източна Румелия с Княжество България.

Столица на обединената българска държава става София, поради което сградата на Пиетро Монтани остава лишена от смисъла на предназначението си. Март 1886 г., със заповед на министър-председателя Петко Каравелов, в нея се настанява Пловдивската народна библиотека и музей.

По повод 100-годишнината от Съединението на България е преотстъпена за откриване на експозиция „Съединение на България от 1885 г.“.

Този архитектурен паметник, приютил паметта за Съединението и неговата защита, и днес е символ на българското единство и държавност. „Съединението прави силата“ не е само девиз, а вечната истина за българския народ!

On-site at the museum exhibitions, cash and card payments are accepted. For online ticket purchases, you can pay with a bank card.
